Darius Jones - interview for Monheim Triennale ’25

For the past few years, I’ve been a guest writer/editor for the German experimental music festival, the Monheim Triennale. It’s a delightful escape from the confines of music-as-usual – four days in which a sleepy little town on the Rhine decides to host a series of improvisational encounters between some of the most talented players across jazz, folk, electronica and voice.

In 2024 the festival assembled another brilliant cohort of contrasting talents, from all corners of the world. Among them, I was lucky to get the chance to interview Darius Jones - one of America’s most compelling instrumentalists and composers. Although his primary instrument is sax, his musical vision is incredibly broad and informed by many of the roiling features of the American experience.
